Milk toffee, also known as the Scottish Tablet, is a sweet treat that occasionally hits the spot. It’s creamy and tastes like milk.
Ingredients
- 2lb granulated sugar
- 1 cup 2% milk
- One can of condensed milk with 1/4 cup removed from it.
- 1 teaspoon butter
Instructions
- Place sugar, milk, and butter in a heavy pan and let them dissolve slowly at a low heat (mine was set at low) for about an hour until the sugar and butter have completely dissolved.
- Now add the sweetened condensed milk and bring it up to a boil.
- Once it has reached boiling point, turn it down to the lowest heat and whisk continuously (you can use one beater on an electric whisk for this) until it turns a light brown and comes away from the side of the pan. This will take approximately 1/2 hour.
- You can test the setting consistency by placing a teaspoon of the toffee mixture onto a plate and putting it in the fridge for five minutes. You will know when it’s ready if you press on it. It should be firm, and a clean swipe with your finger should go through it.
- Finally, pour it into a lightly greased baking tray and leave to cool on the worktop until you can put it into the fridge to harden overnight.
Note:
Score it with a knife before the Milk Toffee sets, so it’s easier to divide up.
It is an excellent candy for indulgence if you have a sweet tooth. I know I have one!

This sure does look good Nicola!!! I’ll be watching for a good sale on sugar for sure here!! Can I just use a whole 2kg bag or will I need to add extra to make the 2 lb??
I used to make my Mom’s chow mien recipe until I couldn’t find one of the ingredients for it but I keep looking. Mom didn’t make a lot of things from recipes but I have gotten a good number of recipes from hubby’s Mom and sister over the years that I make here.
Id make it up to 2lb. I always have my scales at hand lol. Costco have good prices if you can get there.
sounds so yummy. Lol, only problem I see is it would serve me 12 times, not 12 servings….lol
Haha that’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all day.
I am about to make this milk toffee with my kids. They are actually excited to prepare and eat these bars of milk toffee. Thanks Nicola. More easy to make recipe to come please.
