{"id":89638,"date":"2021-07-27T09:55:01","date_gmt":"2021-07-27T13:55:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/?p=89638"},"modified":"2024-12-23T05:36:56","modified_gmt":"2024-12-23T05:36:56","slug":"how-to-create-a-detailed-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digitalskyweb.co\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2021\/07\/27\/how-to-create-a-detailed-budget\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Create A Detailed Budget"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Let me show you how we evolved our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2021\/07\/15\/saving-up-cash-kept-us-out-of-debt-june-2021-budget-update\/\">money-saving strategy<\/a><\/strong> by creating a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2021\/05\/13\/what-does-a-sample-budget-look-like-april-2021-budget-update\/\">detailed budget<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Money is frustrating; I get it and realize that people struggle to make ends meet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s not a situation that anyone wants to be in; however, finding a way to change is possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine watching a movie that had little to no detail where it had apparent missing parts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the movie&#8217;s end, you&#8217;re still wondering who did it, why they did it, and other missing pieces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a puzzle to be complete, you must have all the pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lacking details most often lead to less-than-desirable results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why budget failure happens and perhaps why budgets get a negative rap. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I won&#8217;t lie to you, but <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2017\/04\/01\/secret-society-debt-freedom\/\">debt-freedom<\/a><\/strong> is a pretty awesome rap! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Budget Failure Is Typical<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Have you ever failed at budgeting? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Budget failure is typical, especially for newbies, but it can improve if you have a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2020\/04\/30\/5-financial-resources-we-use-for-personal-success\/\">financial plan<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you even begin considering a budget is crucial to map out what you want from it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Budgeting is about tracking debt, expenses, and savings. <strong>Pretty simple right? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While that basic information is suitable for some people, it&#8217;s not for others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re committed to budgeting, try a different budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve been through 4 styles of budgeting until we found the right one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process is half the battle, but the outcome is worth every minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Importance Of Details <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter what we spend our money on, we often want to know the details. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you&#8217;re buying a house, you want to know everything about that house.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having informative details also means they include the good, bad and ugly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why would you invest money into something that won&#8217;t fit your lifestyle or budget?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another example is buying a new product at the grocery store and wanting to know the ingredients or health information.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saving money has long been a part of everyone&#8217;s thoughts and dreams, but not everyone does it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking money advice from people struggling to make ends meet is not something we&#8217;ve done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve only followed a handful of successful financial bloggers because that&#8217;s where we want to be, successful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;re only going to learn how people get out of debt if they do from bloggers who are in debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s fine if that&#8217;s who you want to trust with your money principles but consider success just as important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, I want to be prosperous or debt-free, which my readers often tell me is their goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With any budget we&#8217;ve used, it was noticeable after months of experimenting that we wanted to know more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Budgeting Isn&#8217;t For Everyone <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve also learned about various types of people who use a budget or don&#8217;t believe in budgeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong, if you think budgeting sucks or isn&#8217;t going to help your purpose, that&#8217;s fine too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately the money manager directs the path that one wants to take financially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>L<strong>azy Budget User <\/strong>used to be us before CBB even existed. Using our bank account to budget was all we thought we needed. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Detailed Budget Geek (that&#8217;s us)<\/strong> This is where we are today, and we continue to use it monthly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Simple Budget Users<\/strong> may be a paper and pencil budget, money jars, or envelope budgeting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Technology Budget <\/strong>styles use budgeting mobile apps or online versions of a paid budget.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Excuse Budget User<\/strong> is a person who does not budget nor believes in using one as the money goes in and out. There may or may not be any savings, investing, or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2012\/03\/03\/emergency-savings-fund-in-canada-how-much-why\/\">emergency savings<\/a><\/strong> because there&#8217;s always an excuse to spend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I can probably think of many more, but I want to point out the <strong>benefits of a detailed budget<\/strong> for the sake of this post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We didn&#8217;t just jump into a detailed budget; past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trust me on this; it will be the eye-opener you wished you were aware of earlier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In saying that, I strongly recommend anyone who has never used a budget to read my <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/10-step-mini-budgeting-series\/\">mini budgeting series. <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It includes ten steps or blog posts that detail how we created our budget using baby steps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means we took our time researching and putting together a budget that might work for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It turns out that it did, and it didn&#8217;t stop there because we&#8217;ve increased our knowledge of detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know, you&#8217;re probably saying, Mr. CBB, what in the heck is a detailed budget? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s walk into our <strong>budgeting pas<\/strong>t to see a detailed budget and how we made it there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is A Detailed Budget? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A detailed budget gives you more information about a specific budget category. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, let&#8217;s use the <strong>grocery budget category<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of just a grocery budget, you could add a sub-category of cleaning supplies: toilet paper, laundry soap, dish soap, paper towels, tea towels, dishcloths, and apparent cleaning products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of mixing them both into the grocery budget category, you divide them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is to understand in detail how much your household supplies are costing you vs. food and drink. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this information, you may find that you spend too much money on groceries or household products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You take this information and figure out a plan to combat the budget category or sub-category to reduce costs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps buying a lower costing hand soap or stocking up on deals in this category may do the trick. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It allows you to have options with details, and with every budget, options are good. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This also gives the user control over where the money goes instead of guessing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, our grocery budget is just for food and health, and beauty is for all the others listed above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Should Use A Detailed Budget?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A detailed budget takes longer to process, but the outcome is more data to work with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This helps the user pinpoint areas they can improve to save money and pay off debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re wondering why we still use this budget since we are debt-free, we want to keep saving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone can use a detailed budget, but this may be valuable for someone who wants to tighten the rope. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having as much detail as possible when you struggle to make ends meet or want to save is critical. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this reason, a detailed budget can be far more valuable than a basic budget that targets a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A whole would be a budget category that includes everything under the umbrella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you open the umbrella, the same budget category releases the detailed budget as described above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Detailed Budget Spreadsheet Example <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve been sharing our detailed budget spreadsheet created in Excel for years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of you shy away because they are user-friendly if you understand basic excel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the more specific budgeting questions I&#8217;m often asked is how many budget categories are needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This blog exemplifies how a detailed budget works compared to a bare-bones budget. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Essentially, the answer concerns how much information you want to learn about your <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2022\/11\/08\/6-habits-stalling-your-financial-independence\/\">spending habits<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is a photo of our detailed monthly example. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only expense for this category is for our son&#8217;s soccer and, in the past, baseball, skating and swimming lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve never detailed this budget category since there is little to detail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if you have multiple children or adults who belong to clubs, it would be beneficial to add sub-categories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This also makes it easier to plan next year&#8217;s budget when you can tally up the numbers at the end of the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Little Johnny spent $1000 on soccer, baseball, and hockey, all due on various year dates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soccer is due in May, Hockey is due in October, and Baseball is due in March. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The detail is essential to save money before the expense is due.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mom and dad spend <strong>$500 on a gym m<\/strong>embership each or $1000 a year, due on June 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to save approximately <strong>$1500 a year<\/strong> in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2012\/08\/23\/budget-step-10-projected-expenses\/\">projected expenses<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be mindful of the dates of each expense so you correctly set up your projected costs in our excel budget. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Certain Budgets Aren&#8217;t For Everyone <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If a budget doesn&#8217;t work for you, then perhaps it&#8217;s not the proper budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to be comfortable with the budget that you choose. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll know when you&#8217;ve found the right budget when you can&#8217;t wait to find out how well you&#8217;ve managed your money each month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img when the money is gone, it&#8217;s gone. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Budgeting Apps<\/strong> are great for people who enjoy mobile technology-based budgeting <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Modifying A Detailed Budget As We Age<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>detailed budget<\/strong> is probably the last budget we will ever need because it fulfils our needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although there will undoubtedly be a switch to a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2016\/09\/22\/fixed-income-seniors-learn-how-to-budget\/\">simple budget as we age<\/a><\/strong>, especially if one of us is in a nursing home or long-term care facility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that a budget doesn&#8217;t last forever and must be updated by the user. valuable and critical to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2019\/02\/05\/how-to-create-a-successful-budget-bucket-list\/\">budgeting success. <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the most part, I feel that people give up on budgeting not because the budget fails but because they fail the budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has given us the freedom of not owing money to anyone and to boost
