earns more monthly money than I did at <strong>my first job in Canada<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recently decided to let my readers interested in<strong> starting a blog learn more about the process.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s not to say that my process for starting a blog is the same as other bloggers, so bear with me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-baby-steps-for-starting-a-blog\">Baby Steps For Starting A Blog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For those new to my <strong>starting a blog series,<\/strong> I want you to know I&#8217;m taking baby steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about budgeting and how intense of a process it would be if I wrote everything about the topic in one blog post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related: <a and move on for some people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would help if you didn&#8217;t go anywhere because I almost did the same thing when starting a blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking back, I lost thousands of dollars because I dropped into the blogging world like a <strong>bomb<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I thought blogging was simple, and I was wrong because you&#8217;ll work hard to get your foot off the ground. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I won&#8217;t sugar-coat it like some other bloggers do to earn affiliate income from you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a case of either you want to blog or you don&#8217;t, <strong>end of the story<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, after starting a blog, it takes time for someone to see you and want to learn from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-part-time-blogging-income-for-cbb\">Part-Time Blogging Income For CBB<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, I blog part-time, writing and updating the blog and earning a five-figure yearly income I never imagined possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By part-time, I mean each blog post takes me up to 8 hours to research, plan, write, and create. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I say I work part-time, but I currently work two full-time jobs because I love blogging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know many successful finance bloggers and food bloggers who earn millions blogging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m not that person because I still work full time, which requires more time than I currently have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The significant part about starting a blog is that it&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2019\/09\/19\/how-many-income-streams-should-i-have-net-worth-update-august-2019-0-03\/\">backup income<\/a><\/strong> in the case of an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s also a legacy we can leave to our son, who may one day take over and share his journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reasons-for-starting-a-blog\">Reasons For Starting A Blog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why do you want to blog?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I started a blog to find an outlet where I could share my passion for finance and food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you work and have a family, having sacred things for only you is nice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, besides blogging, I like to read, work out, and search the web to learn more about blogging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m perhaps a nerd at best, but blogging keeps me accountable to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/free-tools\/monthly-budgets-budget-highlights\/\">our budget <\/a><\/strong>while allowing me to share our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2021\/04\/06\/how-we-stay-debt-free-with-no-regrets\/\">debt-free success<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The part that resonates with my readers is that we did have debt, never won the lottery, no one gave us a dime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We worked hard for every dollar that helped us <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2019\/08\/27\/how-i-owned-a-mortgage-free-house-by-age-40\/\">pay off our house in 5 years<\/a><\/strong> while maxing out our investments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was difficult, but we led a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2020\/09\/01\/20-habits-of-a-debt-free-frugal-family-free-budget-binder-printable\/\">frugal life<\/a><\/strong> and started a blog that earned extra cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don&#8217;t know why you want to blog, perhaps sitting down with a piece of paper and writing it out might help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s what I did. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is the actual piece of paper that we worked on in 2012 before the blog began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was part of the process I learned about in the Blogging For Dummies book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure why I kept this piece of paper, but I was proud of myself and still am at the time. <\/p>\n\n\n<div There has to be some value in what you write about for your subscribers to want to keep coming back. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do you want them to listen to what you have to say? <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Is the topic you are discussing relatable to the blog and the subscribers who come to read it?<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Have you researched your topic before you present it to your audience? <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-time-needed-to-blog\">Time Needed To Blog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you have the time to commit to a blog?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh my goodness, you could blog forever and ever if you don&#8217;t set your priorities straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating a blogging plan is critical so you know when you begin and when you should end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My blogging schedule is relatively simple as I blog three days a week, plus a bi-weekly newsletter and frugal recipe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since COVID-19, blogging has been challenging as I worked from home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cherry on top was that our son was learning online, which meant my schedule was everywhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you finish your blog post and hit publish, there are always things you can do to update your blog. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, I&#8217;ve been going back and adding SEO to old blog posts, adding information, and ensuring I get the two green dots on SEO Yoast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SEO Yoast is a plugin for your blog, which I will discuss in another post. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a free service; however, they have Yoast Pro, a premium service offering even more tools for $89<strong> a year.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yoast ensures your blog post follows SEO standards, and you&#8217;ll either get a green light for &#8220;Readability&#8221; and &#8220;SEO&#8221; or a red light, which means your post has issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-business-blog-or-personal-blog\">Business Blog Or Personal Blog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.com\/create\/?aff=14053\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/refer.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/large-rectangle-db-desk.png\" alt=\"WordPress.com\" title=\"WordPress.com\"\/><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you have money for a blog start-up?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to start a personal blog as a hobby, use <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.com\/alp\/?aff=14053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">wordpress.com<\/a><\/strong> as it&#8217;s the best free platform available and easy to use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where I first started Canadian Budget Binder in 2012 after reading&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4btb9lh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blogging For Dummies<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you begin blogging, ask yourself whether you want a blog that is a <strong>hobby<\/strong> or one where you plan to earn <strong>passive income<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can establish this from the start, it will make the entire process of starting a blog more accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, to monetize your blog, go straight to <strong>wordpress.org<\/strong> and begin your journey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-find-a-domain-name-before-starting-to-blog\">How To Find A Domain Name Before Starting To Blog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I was a dummy and sometimes still feel like one because there is always something to learn about CBB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By that time, I had already known what I wanted to call my blog,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since finance and food were two topics I loved to talk about, Canadianbudgetbinder sounded appropriate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The binder encompasses all aspects of life where money can affect you financially. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about Food, Retirement, Debt Reduction, Budgeting, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving forward, I registered my domain name with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.com\/alp\/?aff=14053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">WordPress <\/a><\/strong>and went away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to own a domain name, it&#8217;s best to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cira.ca\/ca-domains\/register-your-ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">check the name availability<\/a><\/strong> and purchase it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also go to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.com\/alp\/?aff=14053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">WordPress.com <\/a>and complete a <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.com\/domains\/\" went with <strong>www.canadianbudgetbinder.com<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buying and registering your domain name makes your business look professional rather than just a hobby blog. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you <strong>own your domain name, <\/strong>you pay a yearly fee, your <strong>self-hosting fee,<\/strong> and an email subscription service with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailerlite.com\/a\/eqyphaxhui\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Mailerlite<\/strong><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, these three expenses are close to <strong>$300 <\/strong>Canadian each year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, I registered my site with the Google Search Console, so I had access to blogging resources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, blogging allows you to <strong>claim various <a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2021\/03\/09\/self-employed-guide-for-business-owners-in-canada\/\">business expenses<\/a><\/strong> on your income tax return. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep all receipts related to your blog and document everything, including your income and expenses.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-write-a-blog-post\">How To Write A Blog Post<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Blogging in my early days, I went a bit crazy writing every day but nothing near what it should have been. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve since learned it&#8217;s better to write a well-researched article twice weekly instead of doing a blog dump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When writing a story, it should have a beginning, middle, and end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A similar process applies to a blog post; however, there are rules when writing a blog post. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although I knew about <strong>Search Engine Optimization<\/strong> (SEO), I didn&#8217;t utilize it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want what you write to be recognized by Google or other search engines, you must implement SEO. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By doing so, you may see your blog post on the first page of Google for the search term you used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if I used the word &#8220;blog&#8221; as my keyword in the title of this post, I could do a keyword search with Google Adwords or SemRush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">I also use SemRush&nbsp;<\/span>for this blog to find long-tail keywords worth every dollar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A long-tail keyword is more than just one word, such as Starting A Blog. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semrush.com\/lp\/competitive-research-4\/en\/?ref=2270699030&amp;refer_source=&amp;utm_source=berush&amp;utm_medium=promo&amp;utm_campaign=link_competitive_intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>SEMrush<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;is an excellent&nbsp;<strong>SEO research tool<\/strong>&nbsp;that will take your blog from the back of Google to the front window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Optimization means money,<\/strong>&nbsp;so don\u2019t leave money on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve done this, you can start to write your blog post,<strong> <\/strong>which I will explain in another blogging series post on CBB. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-search-engines-and-social-media\">Search Engines and Social Media <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google<\/a><\/strong> is king in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inspire.scot\/blog\/2016\/11\/11\/top-12-best-search-engines-in-the-world238\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">search engines<\/a>,<\/strong> followed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bing<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ca.yahoo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yahoo<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">AOL<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ask.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ask.Com<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.ca\/cdnbudgetbinder\/_created\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pinterest<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, as many people believe, Pinterest is a search engine and not social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social media pages such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CanadianBudgetBinder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Facebook<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">TikTok<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CanadianBudgetB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twitter<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">YouTube<\/a>, <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/blog\/canadianbudgetbinder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tumblr<\/a><\/strong> are essential tools for your blog business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I advise setting up social media accounts relevant to your blog and various search engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Search engines will crawl your blog for keywords people search on the web. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you follow SEO correctly, you may find your blog post front and center, so people first click on your blog post. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hardly anyone searches past the third page when doing a Google search for a self-hosted blog and monetize it is that your income fluctuates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideally, you will want to see your blog income increase monthly, but it will never be the same.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I do
