Then we have people who don’t know how to deal with their emotions and anyone that steps in their way sets off a trigger that could turn deadly over something small in most cases.

This stuff really does happen

I remember a time in the UK while I was grocery shopping a woman turned the corner of an aisle with her shopping cart and her child was distracting her while sitting in the carrier seat of the cart. The woman wasn’t looking where she was going and smashed into another customer’s shopping cart knocking her purse to the ground.

Conveniently her purse was wide open and the contents fell out for everyone to see which upset the women who verbally got abusive with the lady. The situation was resolved quickly but not after an hot exchange of words that made the mother cry. The grocery store bully felt bad and explained she was having a rough day and didn’t mean to upset her and agreed that it was just an accident.

Sometimes it’s best to bite your tongue in such situations or chalk it up to an accident that didn’t cause any harm. She likely caused herself more embarrassment with the two other customers looking on than she figured from us seeing her lady things on the ground and other contents of her purse. (that can be a scary place- I know I steer clear of my wife’s purse at all costs, ha)

When you meet a situation at the grocery store whether it be inside or out in the parking lot that gets a bit heated the best advice is to turn around and walk away. You may remember the Costco fight over a parking spot that recently made headlines in Mississauga, Ontario and spread on the internet like wildfire. It was childish and dangerous to see couples fight the way they did especially in front of children.

Related: Brawl erupts in Costco Parking Lot after dispute of a Spot

In the amazing video you can see a brawl got out of hand which could have easily been avoided if people understood how to deal with their emotions. Road rage is a growing problem all over the world as is parking lot rage especially at the grocery store and malls where parking can be slim pickings at times.

Road rage is aggressive or angry behavior by a driver of an automobile or other road vehicle which includes rude gestures, verbal insults, physical threats or dangerous driving methods targeted toward another driver to intimidate or release frustration. Road rage can lead to altercations, assaults and collisions that result in serious physical injuries or even death. It can be thought of as an extreme case of aggressive driving.

Grocery Store road rage is a little less intimidating than automobile road rage but people can get seriously hurt in both situations if not diffused quickly. It doesn’t matter if you have a car or a grocery cart there are customers who thrive on confrontation and you need to steer clear of these situations.

Types of confrontation

There are different types of but the worst is when you get right up in someone’s face and then a fight breaks out. These two dudes below in the video are now internet stars as this video where the guy holding two grocery bags knocks the other guy out.

Dis what happens at my job lmfao #baldwinpark #superiorgrocers pic.twitter.com/CnStW8GC4C

— Leah Rose (@Oh_leahS) July 15, 2016

Dis what happens at my job lmfao #baldwinpark#superiorgrocerspic.twitter.com/CnStW8GC4C

— Leah Rose (@Oh_leahS) July 15, 2016

Relationship Confrontation

All couples argue so it’s no surprise when on occasion you hear them get bent out of shape in the aisle next to your or right in front of you. Some couples don’t care if there is an audience and they will full on battle it out with spectators hanging out to watch the action. The fact here is that it’s easy to see when couples get in fights by gestures and the tone of their voice.

If you find you and your partner are irritated with each other for grocery related concerns or home issues remember that privacy in a relationship is a bond that should be kept tight. The whole world doesn’t need to know that you are having problems unless they are serious and police need to be involved.

Keep your cool, hold hands and work together on finding what you need at the grocery store. A little kiss, squeeze and lots of laughs goes a long way too. Solve your relationship problems at home if you can and take time out to understand what the underlying issue is. You can’t take words back once you’ve said them.

Family Confrontation

Before heading to the grocery store a great way to get the family on board is to talk about the trip. If the parents and kids know what foods you’ll be buying and how to present themselves at the grocery store it may set some ground rules. A great way to get the family involved is to play grocery store games such as guess the price or find the product. Keeping the family occupied is a great way to keep confrontations at bay.

In the event a confrontation between family members arises remind them that the grocery store is not the place for that type of behaviour. Sometimes all you need is someone to step in to help settle a dispute.

Customer Confrontation

This is probably a huge problem at the grocery store as I noted above but we’ve seen and experienced on many occasions just how rude some customers can be. I’ve been told to get out-of-the-way with no manners in sight and shoved aside to get the last sale product from a shelf.

These types of bully customers are not only asking for a fight they seem to think that they are above other customers and can do what they want when they want. Sadly, they may piss off the wrong customer and find out just how easy it is to send someone else off the deep end.

If you find you are in this type of confrontation, walk away. It’s not worth it. You don’t know them, they don’t know you and you should just smile and get on with your day. That will likely be enough to send them storming off in a tizzy.

Store Clerk Confrontation

Now these confrontations are what we see most often because the cashier is the last point of service where money exchanges hands. For those people who may be under financial stress and struggling to pay for their groceries, had a bad day at work, fight with their partner or family member or those who think that cashiers should be perfect things can get hurtful.

Whether it’s the cashier who starts the confrontation or the customer it’s important to remember that there are customers behind you, children may be present and it makes your character look awful. You never know if someone is in the grocery store that you know such as friends, family, your boss or future boss. Keep your cool and save your steam for a jog after work/grocery shopping or doing something that relaxes you.

If you find you are in this situation either escalate kindly to the next level of management in the store and move along. When a cashier is faced with this situation the best thing you can do is following training outlined by your employer and do your best to defuse the situation and come up with a reasonable solution with-in store guidelines or call a manager.

Management Confrontation

Customer vs. Management showdown is always a get the popcorn moment for onlookers because when an irate customer takes a complaint from store associate level to management things can get heated.

There are customers that expect the manager to solve their issue on the spot whether they are in the wrong or not. Belief that the customer is always right is rubbish in my opinion but it’s important to solve any concerns from a management perspective to keep the customer happy and not cause any further embarrassment for the store.

Managers should be trained to deal with confrontation because difficult people are a part of their job and likely he/she will be the person who sets the issue straight so everyone can go on with their day.

If you find you are in a war of words with management sometime it’s best to take a step back, regroup and call head office and explain to them. If the manager isn’t helping you then your store concern will go no further at that level.

Children Confrontation

I think just about everyone has heard children screaming in the grocery store and for various reasons. They may be hungry, not getting what they want or looking for attention. In some cases they could be having a crisis with their sibling or other children at the store. It happens.

Some of us have no choice but to bring our children to the grocery store and in some instances confrontation can spark a battle between siblings and strangers. If your child is allowed to roam free or beside you when grocery shopping always be alert to what they are doing. It’s easy as a parent to get distracted and before you know it someone is down on the ground or being pushed for one reason or another.

When we go grocery shopping we always bring snacks, drinks and to keep our son occupied books and cars for him to play with. It doesn’t always solve the problem of him having a melt-down but we are teaching him that patience and kindness is important. Whether he becomes a big brother one day or he happens to clash with another grocery store child over the last sample cookie he’ll know to walk away.

If you find your children in confrontation situations let your parenting 101 skills come into play and share with them why they should not treat each other in such a manner and how they should go about saying sorry to one another.

Choose Your Battles Wisely

Fighting never solves anything and getting banned from the grocery store is almost laughable. If the grocery store is a place you get a bit tee’d off think before you act especially if you are making a big deal out of nothing.

Remember we all have a minute to live and that includes patience to get to the next part of our day.

Have you ever witnessed any grocery store confrontations?

Have you been involved with a grocery store confrontation?

Comment below and explain what happened and the outcome.

July Grocery Game Challenge posts 2016

Join in the 2016 Grocery Game Challenge (GGC) fun and post your grocery shop in the comment section of each GGC blog post.
