It occurred to me that what someone else finds motivating, entertaining, peaceful and rich is not how others view it.

However, when we compare people who have money society believes they are in fact the lucky one’s who are living the dream, whatever that is. It all boils down to the ability to have “stuff” and potentially less financial stress. Not all rich people have vanished money concerns either because as their estates, adventures and toys grow so does debt and bills.

While enjoying the Canada Day festivities yesterday we went to our friend’s house for some backyard fun in the kiddie pool, cold beers, freezies and catching up conversation. Before we even made our way over to the house a text came in telling us not to mind the mess in the house. No big deal we thought, you should see our place at times with a toddler running around.

When you have kids you have to pick and choose what you do based on what is happening throughout the day. One of our conversations revolved around chores and how tough it was as a parent to keep a tidy household inside and out.

Our conversation continued to revolve around how being a redneck was better than having to live life defined by what other people think you should or should not be doing. Back many years ago my friend’s wife was dating a wealthy man who bought her anything her heart desired.

As the years went on she had to conform to be who his family thought she should be especially if she were to marry him. That meant that they had house cleaners and most of her time was spent getting ready to look good in public doing things she didn’t care to do. It was all about business relations and making money and not enjoying life.

Most times she was bored and just wanted to let loose and live a little. She admits that money was the motivator in why she began dating him but she didn’t think it would be as complicated as it turned out to be. It’s hard to say no when a guy is spending money on you, she recalls as the memories come flooding back. Money can control a relationship by dictating the type of lifestyle that you must lead.

As she took a sip of her homemade wine she looked at us both and said, “I don’t care what people think especially since we don’t have lots of money. I’d rather be a redneck over being a rich man’s girl again.” As jaw-dropping as some people may take this there are some of you reading this thinking that this girl has her head screwed on straight. It doesn’t matter though because it’s her life, her choice.

A mutual friend of ours is wealthy and looking to buy a cottage on the lake. She likes big, fancy things because she has the money and wants to spend it. She also likes to show off what she has earned although most people don’t care. All they want to know is how much money she has and how she earned it because it becomes part of the comparison game which can be deadly to our emotions.

Not all wealthy people live like this as there are many people who have a fat bank account and would rather live a redneck lifestyle. You may not even know your buddy is a millionaire because of the way he chooses to live his life but he very well could be. Heck, my wife and I consider ourselves a redneck couple because we aren’t that flashy type of couple who likes to make sure everyone knows we have cash in the bank. It’s just so much more than that, but in a good way.

Look…here comes a redneck

What is a redneck?

A hillbilly, cracker, white trash individual with no motivation to be successful. There may be some truth to this however labelling everyone the same doesn’t make any sense based on how they choose to live their life.

The term redneck is a derogatory term chiefly used for a rural poor white person in the Southern United States.

If you live in Canada you know the word redneck is widely used which means it’s not only an “American” thing it’s part of Canadian culture as well.

You might consider yourself a redneck if you’re not made of money and like to live the simple life without the worries of what other people think and say about the way you live. Creating visions from what other people may consider rubbish and learning to have fun with what you have makes for some pretty cool friends to have in your circle.

You’ve seen the photo circulating around Facebook where there are a few guys who put a plastic liner in the back of their pick-up truck, filled it with water and called it a pool. The photo depicts the men relaxing in the truck pool, smiling with beers in their hands. That my friends is what a redneck life is all about, creating memories without having to run out and buy them.

Your redneck friends may be creative in the kitchen, garden and all other facets of life. If you want to know how to do something for cheap or how to re-purpose something your redneck friends will tell you how to get the job done.

I had no idea what a redneck was when I moved to Canada as I was not familiar with the term. My wife would often compare something/someone to being redneck and I’d have to have her explain what she was going on about. Now that I’ve lived in Canada for 9 years I’ve been more than exposed to Canadian culture and different ways of life.

Related: How I made my move to Canada from the UK

We have friends who live in the country-side who are redneck, city-folk who are redneck and wealthy peeps who are redneck without the trail of gold. My wife’s best friend is what society would consider a redneck and she is one of the most creative people we know.

She may be loud but she sure can draw, sew, garden, cook/bake, hunt, fish, paint, ride a motorcycle and is 100% beautiful in her own fashionable way. Her house is filled with stuff she got second-hand or free and decorated with love.

We consider her family and couldn’t imagine her any other way. Even if she came into money I don’t think she’d change the lifestyle that she has grown up with as she considers it her way of life. Money doesn’t change the person you were it only buys more stuff and can pay the bills if budgeted properly.

You Might Be A Redneck

Redneck word of the day is…

If you really want to know what a redneck is check out the outrageously funny stand-up comedian Jeff Foxworthy who has a show called “Redneck Comedy” which is funny as hell and worth the watch. Although he has a laugh about being a redneck himself most of what he says is true but it’s not a bad way of life. In fact a redneck likely has more life experiences than someone who grew up bathing in money or with parents who had no financial hardships.

My definition of redneck is that it is a glorious absence of sophistication Jeff Foxworthy

I’ve heard it all but what I consistently feel is that being redneck means something more than what society believes a true redneck is all about.

You may be a redneck if you use coupons, garage sale and your mode of transportation is a bicycle, skateboard or you must walk or take the bus everywhere because you don’t have a license. If you do drive it’s a rusty old pick-up truck that needs repair work but you’d rather just run it into the ground first before taking care of the maintenance.

Not far from the truth depending on the state of redneck you meet up with but it’s amazing how the term “redneck” is bottle-necked between cool and down-right awful. When I say the state of redneck I mean just how far into redneck society they have taken themselves.

Not everyone has the money or cares to live a systematic life where everything must be done a certain way. Living life day by day and going with the flow may be a suitable way to express what a redneck loves about their life.

Redneck clothing seems to be what one would consider a dead give-away with jean-overalls, farmers tan, unshaven, ball caps on top of a mullet or unruly hair. Not all rednecks look or dress this way but this is what people believe because we’ve created this ideal out of cookie cutter societal views.

You might be a redneck if your clothing comes from second-hand shops, hand me downs or given to you free from strangers on the internet. Yep, that would be redneck apparel at its finest when it comes pre-stretched and faded with the odd holes and stains.

You might be a redneck if…

Redneck camping is in your back-yard because you can’t afford to take a real vacation.

Redneck party means hanging out in the kitchen, on the front porch, by a pit fire or outside a local coffee shop yip-yapping and laughing about life. At least you’re smiling.

Redneck dating might mean you take your date for a tractor ride around the farm, to the local diner for a home cooked meal from your aunt and you hang out watching movies, going for a walk, taking photos together hand in hand without spending tonnes of money.

Redneck games might consist of rounding up the cattle, fastest apple picker, potato shooting, skipping rocks in the water and geo-caching because it’s fun and frugal at the same time.

Redneck crafts consist of sitting around finding ways to re-use stuff that you already have such as turning beer cans into a wind-chime or re-purposing indoor furniture for outdoor decor.

Some people might laugh at the above but I’ve done many myself growing up in a small village away from the big city life. We didn’t have lots of money in our family and I had more fun taking off on my bike into the forest exploring nature and swimming for the entire day.

The posh kids whom I didn’t really hang out with had to dress up for fancy events even though they hated it and just wanted to be kids. You could almost sense the jealousy on their faces when they wanted to break free from the chains their parents had on them.

Growing up my wife would collect bottles to exchange for money so she could buy penny candy at the corner shop. That meant that she would hunt in the fields and ditches for beer cans and bottles which made the hunt that much more challenging. She had to work for what she wanted unlike some of her friends who simply got paid an allowance from their parents.

Clothes were always hand-me downs in her family and going on vacation meant they went to Niagara Falls just to see the falls and they’d bring a picnic for lunch before heading home. There was no money to explore all the popular attractions. Camping was also big on their list of family excursions after buying a second-hand camper.

Being a redneck is not 100% flawed as some are lead to believe and whether you choose to be a redneck with or without money means that you cherish simplicity.

Although our friends live pay cheque to pay cheque there is never a dull moment in their lives. She may have experienced both sides of finance from wanting stuff to not caring whether she is trendy among her circle of friends. What I find interesting is how nice it is to put one’s feet up and just stare at the sky with content thinking about what you have rather than what you don’t have.

Life doesn’t get any better!

Are you a redneck and how would your life change if you came into money?

Trouble I got into this week

I managed to finish the swing set for our son which took a bit of work and a few extra bucks but it looks brand new again. I’m also working on making a tool and gadget or trinket board so he can fine-tune his motor skills with his hands.

Apart from heading to the in-laws for a few days for Canada Day celebrations it was back home to get cleaned up, get lunches ready for work and finally sleep in our own bed. Every time we sleep anywhere but our bed we miss it like crazy and I always get back aches. Our son didn’t do so well once again for this trip. We’re already into July so there’s no point really. We want to share what we have learned, and continue to learn, to help everyone who struggles with money.

Financial stress is a huge problem that can pile up for a lot of people. The majority of people encounter stress about money at some point every single month. Financial stress can also cause a divide between couples, parents and kids and even the closest of friends.

We share our blog weekly and tend to focus on topics such as budgets, smart spending, smarter saving and important events in the world of finances. By subscribing to our newsletter, you will hear from us every single week with a new and exciting topic.

We are very excited to be launching our podcast in a few weeks to provide another way to share our experiences. Our unique perspective is that our message comes from a couple that has developed an open and honest communication about money that has served us well.

Lastly, we offer a budget coaching service through our website Couple Of Sense that we hope will be a guide to helping a lot of people find financial freedom. Thank you to Mr. CBB for the opportunity to introduce ourselves to your readers. We encourage you to browse through Canadian Budget Binder and the other contributors to the Making a Difference series for lots of great ideas.

Yummy Recipe Find

Food and grocery shopping are relevant to us because food is a large part of the budget which people struggle the most with.

We all have to eat to survive but just because we have a budget doesn’t mean we can’t eat delicious home-cooked meals that are drool-worthy.

If you are someone who would rather buy convenience foods consider cooking homemade meals or baking from scratch.
