From creating a Will to investing, learn how we plan for retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our financial advisor told us once that our <strong>retirement savings plan<\/strong> looked suitable for our age. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We won&#8217;t know the future until we arrive, but planning today for tomorrow is critical, even if life is not guaranteed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, we knew there was a long way to go before we&#8217;d feel any thrill about our retirement plan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-two-of-life-s-predictions\">Two Of Life&#8217;s Predictions <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to get excited about financial freedom when you don&#8217;t know what you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We knew we needed to keep our finances in order and ensure we had a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2020\/08\/06\/the-harsh-consequences-of-dying-with-no-will-in-canada\/\">legal Will<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They say taxes and death are the only certainty in life, and it&#8217;s true. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Most of my colleagues don&#8217;t often talk about retirement because we want to work and use our expertise, as this is what we want to do with our lives. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I remember working dead-end jobs or jobs I hated; retirement sounded good every morning, before and after coffee. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Retirement may not be a hot topic at work, but I&#8217;m sure behind-the-scenes money is being saved for when the time comes to say hello to a new way of life.&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;m only a newbie,<\/span> so I suspect some long-standing employees make more than six figures yearly and have a decent defined retirement savings plan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-debt-to-income-ratio\">Debt-To-Income Ratio<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though a significant<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> income may be impressive, it may also mean lots of debt. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s just another way to calculate a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2019\/01\/08\/how-to-calculate-your-debt-to-income-ratio\/\">debt-to-income ratio<\/a><\/strong> to understand better where one stands financially. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;ve always credited myself for<\/span> wanting a career I love over accepting a position just for the money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to love what I do because the money is just a bonus to do stuff with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why I work as hard as I do now, hoping<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> the future will look brighter for my family. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-never-know-the-dark-secrets-that-lurk-behind-the-eyes-of-success\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You never know the dark secrets that lurk behind the eyes of success<br><\/span><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Your income does not equal what you are worth.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It never has been and never will be because earnings are just numbers. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What you do with that number counts, especially when working out a retirement savings plan for down the road.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-preparing-for-the-worst\">Preparing For The Worst <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who work from home or own a business are not safe from the perils of losing grip on employment reality either. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be the boss, but with that comes even more responsibility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything can come crashing down in an instant, and then what? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many businesses did not survive Covid-19, and nobody was ready for that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all have to think ahead if we want to be somewhat prepared or face the consequences of the unknown head-on when it gets to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-should-i-retire-early\">Should I Retire Early?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since our son is so young and I&#8217;m no longer in my 20s or 30s, spending more time with the family would be great, even if I retire in the next ten years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By then, our son would be coming up for 12 years, and we&#8217;d have the world at our fingertips. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We love to travel, even if it is a short road trip, but if I were to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2012\/12\/19\/a-beginners-guide-to-early-retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retire early<\/a>, <\/strong>we&#8217;d have every opportunity to see the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>That all sounds groovy, but then what?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong, I love leisure time and the potential to never work again or work for myself <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2023\/10\/20\/how-to-start-a-blog-and-make-money-part-1\/\">building this blog<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you love what you do, it&#8217;s hard to say goodbye, especially when you know you are making a difference in many people&#8217;s lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Mrs. CBB&#8217;s uncle still works as a lawyer in his 70s because he loves what he does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-things-i-don-t-want-to-do-during-retirement\">Things I Don&#8217;t Want To Do During Retirement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I don&#8217;t want to sit on a beach all day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I don&#8217;t want to golf.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I don&#8217;t want another dog.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I don&#8217;t want to travel non-stop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I don&#8217;t want to garden all day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I don&#8217;t want to renovate all day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I don&#8217;t want to blog all day *, haha, just kidding; I love blogging)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Not everyone will agree with my choice, but maybe you don&#8217;t like your career as much as I do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to do what I set out to do: be the best I can be in my chosen career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Would a doctor retire early after spending countless years and hundreds of thousands of dollars on school? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Probably not, and besides, the money is so lucrative. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why would you stop doing something if your body tells you to keep going and you&#8217;re happy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-retirement-plan-wants\">Retirement Plan Wants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I do want to be successful in my career.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seeing my wife and son happy and spending time with them is essential.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I want to provide financially for my family until the end.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most of all, I want to do what makes me happy!! If I&#8217;m unhappy, shifting positive vibes onto others is hard. It would be best to take care of yourself first, especially your health and well-being.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I see many retired people, especially in our neighborhood, who have a good pension and cash in the bank but are bored with life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What you learn by taking the time to talk to older people who wish to have more company in their lives is amazing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are the best conversations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of them golf or go on trips but for the most part we see them around the house puttering about. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They may enjoy this, but I wouldn&#8217;t, at least from my current age and perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe they aren&#8217;t investing enough into their day or maybe that&#8217;s all they can carry out due to health reasons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure what I&#8217;ll feel like in 10 years time so what I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;d like now might drastically change then. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, I will ensure my retirement savings plan is in full swing so I have options when the time comes to decide whether to continue working or sleep a little longer every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-retirement-savings-plan\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Retirement Savings Plan<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve only lived in Canada for (honestly, I have to count every time I post this) coming up 9 years now, so investing in my retirement savings plan has been slow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that when I was earning $15 an hour in Canada, I contributed to my work retirement savings plan and very little to a <a href=\"http:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2012\/09\/10\/rrsps-the-need-to-know-basics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Registered Retirement Savings Plan<\/strong><\/a> (RRSP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since I&#8217;m earning far more, I wasn&#8217;t earning enough money to sock away the cash I have started today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means I have lots of unused savings room, which I will hopefully catch up on by the end of 2016. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June 2017, our net worth was estimated at around one million dollars, but honestly, a million dollars doesn&#8217;t get you much these days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We paid our house off early and have been living frugally and saving money for today and tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2014\/05\/12\/mortgage-free-in-5-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>How we became mortgage-free in 5 years<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-securing-a-financial-future\">Securing A Financial Future <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although I may have a pension plan back home, I need to secure our financial future in Canada now while I still can. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Mrs. CBB is now a stay-at-home mom, it is even more critical for us to worry about our future savings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A million dollars today is hardly anything, so even though it may seem a lot, that perspective always changes depending on where someone lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless we sell our house, which, on a positive note, comparable houses sell from <strong>$450-$500,000,<\/strong> our net income may increase. (We left our house estimate at $345,000).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we were to move to a smaller town, we&#8217;d spend less on a house and have more for our retirement savings plan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems like a legitimate thing to do, but then we think about our son, who may enjoy the bigger city with all the amenities nearby. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He&#8217;s still young now, and we know we have options, but we&#8217;re staying put in our current home, which we love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we don&#8217;t sell the house, that leaves us less than $345,000 of our current net worth, which is tied up because we need somewhere to live. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good part is that we could downsize if needed, so we include it in our net worth update. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This only means we must work harder on our retirement savings plan so the money we do have on hand is liquid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-much-retirement-money-is-needed\">How Much Retirement Money Is Needed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your guess is as good as mine, so I&#8217;ll keep working, saving, and smiling for now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m happy with life even though I&#8217;m always tired. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s certainly amazing what some people can live from when faced with few options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We don&#8217;t need as much as we think to get by, but if you want to travel the world without worry, you may need a beefed-up retirement savings plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the time comes and a retirement early option is available, and if our retirement savings plan is golden, maybe I&#8217;ll consider stepping away early. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only time will tell, but don&#8217;t wait until it&#8217;s too late to invest in your future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nothing is ever guaranteed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Discussion: <\/strong>Do you worry about your retirement savings plan and whether you are doing enough now for tomorrow?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please leave me your comments below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks for reading, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. CBB <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, on to our Net Worth Update for the month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-net-worth-2016\">Net Worth 2016<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"673\" height=\"243\" src=\"https:\/\/digitalskyweb.co\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/March-2016-Net-Worth-Losses-and-Gains.webp\" alt=\"March 2016 Net Worth Losses and Gains\" class=\"wp-image-148857\" style=\"width:809px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/digitalskyweb.co\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/March-2016-Net-Worth-Losses-and-Gains.webp 673w, https:\/\/digitalskyweb.co\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/March-2016-Net-Worth-Losses-and-Gains-300x108.webp 300w, https:\/\/digitalskyweb.co\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/March-2016-Net-Worth-Losses-and-Gains-150x54.webp 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 673px) 100vw, 673px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>RESP Contribution 2016: $208.33 a month.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Changes to our Net Worth in<\/strong> <strong>March<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Absolutely nothing extraordinary happened this month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gains were due to increases in our investments, which got a little rebound from a mild improvement in the markets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The markets have been so hit-and-miss lately that a guaranteed return is hard to predict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve taken a couple of hits in the investments over the last year, but nothing that the rebounds couldn&#8217;t compensate for afterward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seeing a steady monthly increase and watching our money work for us would be encouraging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, investments always have their ups and their downs. achieving what we want to be done as a couple around the house and in our financial lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without them, we would be flying by the seat of our pants, which wouldn\u2019t work for the past year&#8217;s monthly net worth figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using figures from our actual net worth gains over the past 12 months (the solid blue line) it has suggested that <strong>by the end of this year (2016) we should be just shy of $900,000.00<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can change over the years and is only a prediction based on known historical figures from our finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the chart, we should hit the <strong>million mark in June 2017<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is nice to know, but anything can happen over the next year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully, with careful planning, we can <strong>achieve this goal<\/strong> and go beyond it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you set goals for the year?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-different-financial-paths\">Different Financial Paths <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not everyone has the same path in life.
