finding pantry pests in our pasta and dry beans cabinet two weeks ago, keeping an organized pantry is very important for us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since it hadn&#8217;t been a priority the past year, we knew it was time to get serious and put more time into our kitchen organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I started blogging in 2012, I wrote about why having a <a title=\"Free Downloads-Money Saving Tools\" href=\"http:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/free-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>pantry list<\/strong><\/a> was a great way to <a title=\"Help Stock My Pantry To Save Money And Make Healthy Meals?\" href=\"http:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2012\/04\/11\/help-stock-my-pantry-to-save-money-and-make-healthy-meals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>save money and eat healthy.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a pantry full of food is great but sometimes shoppers can go overboard and simply buy too much stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happens then is you have a pantry that is an organized pantry disaster unless you are on top of your game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m sure some of you say your pantry is organized chaos and you can find your way around it, no problem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, are you making sure you aren&#8217;t wasting food?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was us but no longer and wasting food was not our intention as we are a frugal couple. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I even save vegetable scraps to make a broth for soups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We try not to waste anything, so why not use what we have to create delicious food?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was hard to pass by unadvertised deals at the grocery store, and somehow we convinced each other that we needed it because it was a great deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does that sound like you? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How often have you pulled something out of your organized pantry to say,&#8221;<strong>Oh, I forgot I had this<\/strong>&#8220;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m betting more times than you care to admit, but it&#8217;s true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-understanding-the-stockpiling-process\">Understanding The Stockpiling Process <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We&#8217;ve since learned that a <a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2012\/03\/16\/canadian-stockpiling-tips-saving-money-in-the-budget\/\">stocked pantry<\/a> is only good if you;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shop wisely to get the best savings you can for the product you purchase<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buy only what you need or will use up before it expires or creates an overflow of food in the pantry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To our sadness when we found the <strong>flour mites,<\/strong> we had to throw out so much food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were forced to evaluate our grocery shopping habits and how we store food in our kitchen pantry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One kitchen cabinet that is now empty got a complete scrub down although it wasn&#8217;t dirty as much as it was dusty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We wanted to ensure that nothing lurked in the cracks that might cause further problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re happy to report it&#8217;s been pest-free ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing we are doing differently is that we buy less food and are <a title=\"Why Having A Stockpile Budget Will Save You Money: The Grocery Game Challenge 2015 #1 Jan 5- 11\" href=\"http:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2015\/01\/06\/stockpile-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>stockpiling<\/strong><\/a> only what we need. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-organized-pantry\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Organized Pantry<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This week our mission was our pantry and kitchen cupboards so Mrs. CBB and I got busy and began tearing our kitchen apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was time to ensure 100% that we had an organized pantry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of the process was more than keeping a running list and ensuring that we followed a few more steps to keep the cabinet chaos under control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the chaos of our war zone, we realized what we wanted in our next kitchen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, the best way to envision a space is when it&#8217;s in disarray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pantry-and-kitchen-dream-renovations\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pantry And Kitchen <\/span>Dream Renovations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Probably not this year, but we hope to do a complete kitchen remodel within the next year, now that our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2014\/05\/12\/mortgage-free-in-5-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mortgage is paid off<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve been surfing the web looking at different websites and found this website called Houzz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They show us various ways to keep an organized pantry with modern kitchen ideas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ll warn you that once you visit the Houzz website, you will drool over some amazing pantry designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div><a rel=\"follow ideas<\/a><\/small><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One kitchen pantry organization idea that we liked the most was of course the walk-in pantry but sadly we don&#8217;t have the space in our home for one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I promised my wife that our next house would have a walk-in pantry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon looking at the designs we realized that with our kitchen layout, we might be able to install a pantry that would suit our needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We want a pantry that is easy to keep organized to see all the products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s nothing worse than having a dark kitchen pantry away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This frees up space on the counters so I can have a more extensive area to cook and prep food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what did we do to our unorganized pantry? We organized it!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-our-new-organized-pantry\">Our New Organized Pantry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We made sure we took our time to sort the kitchen, and we are proud to say we now have an organized pantry!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is the process we followed to get organized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First, we cleaned off the kitchen table which had far too many items that didn&#8217;t belong. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next, we eliminated anything that should not have been on the countertops. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, Mrs. CBB got out her whip, haha! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-checking-what-you-have-on-hand\">Checking What You Have On Hand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs. CBB asked me to take all of the products out of the kitchen pantry and cupboards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since I am taller, I brought the products out, and she put them on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doing so gives us a better look at what we have and allows us to evaluate the products and check <strong>expiry dates<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What have we learned so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We learned we have lots of food in our pantry that needs to be used up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping organized is not easy, and we&#8217;re the first to admit that lists are awesome but for them to work, <strong>you have to keep on top of them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re a bit ashamed to say we&#8217;ve let it go a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, at the same time, we realize that now that baby CBB is finally sleeping we can get our lives back to some sort of respectable average level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Our next order of business was to take all of the open boxes and make sure 100% that they were sealed with clips and not past expiry. We sat all these boxes in one group.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was important for us to inspect the open boxes as well because you never know what lurks even if you are the cleanest of homeowners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-donate-food-that-you-won-t-eat\">Donate Food That You Won&#8217;t Eat <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We kept the products that were unopened and checked for expiry in another group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If there were products near expiry I dropped them off at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2014\/12\/02\/types-of-food-bank-donations-and-ways-to-save\/\">Food Bank<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There wasn&#8217;t much, but we even got rid of products we knew we wouldn&#8217;t eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our diet has somewhat changed over the past year, so this clear-out was good for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was like a weight fell off of our shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After we cleaned the pantry from top to bottom and it had time to dry, we completed our pantry list and put the products back in the pantry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If there were any doubles of products, we moved them to our basement <strong><a title=\"Why a root cellar is beneficial for stockpiling: The Grocery Game Challenge #2 Aug 4-10, 2014\" href=\"http:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2014\/08\/05\/root-cellar-stockpiling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cold room<\/a> <\/strong>where we stockpile our food even though there&#8217;s not much of it these days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When putting the products back we made sure to space everything out so we could visually see what we had as well by using the pantry list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping like products together is a great way to move around so you grab products that go together like jam and peanut butter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, we are label lovers so we made sure that all of the labels were facing us so we didn&#8217;t have to waste time turning them around.
