your monthly budget. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where is all of your money going? <\/strong>If you&#8217;re reading this and can&#8217;t answer that question, I&#8217;m glad you&#8217;re here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those new to budgeting or if you already use a budget but are struggling to make it work, tracking historical expenses might be your answer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tend not to get overly wordy with finance on CBB because I like to keep the blog understandable for people new to budgeting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, I will explain what a historical expense tracker is, and for <strong>blog subscribers<\/strong>, you can <strong>download and print <\/strong>it for your <strong>budget binder for free<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where Is Your Money Going?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How many of you can tell yourself that you know where all your money is going?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can&#8217;t answer that question, you&#8217;ve put yourself in a spot of uncertainty with your finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Years ago, before we created our budget, we didn&#8217;t think to use a historical expense tracker. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What we did is what most people would do and that tracks current expenses to build an accurate budget. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although we still stand by the method of tracking three months of expenses to build a budget, you don&#8217;t have to wait so long. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only two reasons why you would want to build a budget tracking using present data are;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Your financial situation has changed<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You don&#8217;t have historical data to pull from<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In my <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/10-step-mini-budgeting-series\/\">10-Step Budgeting Mini-Series<\/a><\/strong>, I discuss<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2012\/02\/10\/how-we-designed-our-budget-step-3\/\"> tracking receipts <\/a><\/strong>and their importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, Mrs. CBB and I have discussed the value of historical expenses for creating a budget. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I blogged about creating a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2018\/03\/03\/test-budget-mortgage\/\">mock monthly budget<\/a><\/strong> that included a mortgage, that&#8217;s where the idea of historical data came to fruition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea revolved around seeing whether the user could handle a mortgage and everything that came with owning a house before buying a home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think about creating a budget using three months of historical data works just as well for someone new to budgeting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, when humans are told to be patient or to wait, we become antsy and want to know now, not tomorrow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same is valid with budgeting, especially for those who want to create an accurate budget without tracking forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, you probably want to know the <strong>CBB Historical Expense Tracker<\/strong> details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be transparent, we wish we had tracked historical and current data when we started budgeting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of each year, we tally up our expenses for each budget category and divide them by 12 months to get our historical data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This information helps us create our new year&#8217;s income, second job, extra income, or marriage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Decrease in earnings <\/strong>such as a lost job, death, divorce, child support, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Increased expenses<\/strong> such as bills, property taxes, rent, mortgage, or other related expenses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2017\/02\/25\/financial-sacrifice-helped-40-debt-free\/\">Debt-free<\/a>,<\/strong> such as having extra money to invest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>We are incurring<a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2021\/01\/28\/can-you-inherit-debt-after-the-death-of-a-loved-one\/\"> more debt<\/a><\/strong> such as credit card debt, loans, personal loans, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if your hydro bill increases by $15 a month, this needs to be reflected in your budget immediately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t wait until the end of the year to review the budget to make changes, do them as you go along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to know where your money is going every step of the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is A Historical Expense Tracker?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Using a Historical Expense Tracker to build a budget is the most crucial step toward accuracy by documenting where your money was spent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You probably never thought you&#8217;d go backward to create a monthly budget but trust me, this exercise is a valuable tool. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people who use a budget create wonky numbers in their history<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pharmacy expense history (ask your pharmacy to print a list) <\/strong>or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2020\/01\/14\/4-benefits-of-tracking-monthly-medical-expenses-free-printable\/\">medical expenses tracking printable<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Wherever you can draw data for expenses from the previous three months will benefit the accuracy of your monthly budget. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otherwise, <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transportation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2015\/10\/08\/how-many-budget-categories-should-i-have\/\">budget categories<\/a>; if<\/strong> you need two historical tracking sheets for one month, print or save the form twice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of each month, tally up the expenses for each budget category. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Divide that number by three, and you&#8217;ll have an accurate picture of your future expenses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Groceries for March are <strong>$500, April $580, and May $325 = $1405\/ 3= $468.33<\/strong> each month on average spent for groceries.
