You build wealth from nothing, which turns into something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We still can&#8217;t believe we<strong> paid our $185,000 mortgage off five years <\/strong>after buying our house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2019\/08\/27\/how-i-owned-a-mortgage-free-house-by-age-40\/\">How we became mortgage-free<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We went the opposite of some kids our age when saving and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2014\/07\/03\/june-family-budget-spending-money\/\">spending money<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are plenty of components that help us to build wealth from nothing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number one point is that <strong>we did not inherit any money <\/strong>or<strong> win the lottery<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our income came before marriage, and to be frank, it hasn&#8217;t stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all know how much money we want to retire with, and it is possible, but with effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, I want to share with you how Mrs. CBB and I built wealth from nothing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I say &#8220;building wealth from nothing,&#8221; we started our savings journey with a piggy bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-building-wealth-from-six-hundred-dollars-to-millions\">Building Wealth From Six Hundred Dollars To Millions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you ever heard the expression that you build wealth from the ground up? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means that you learn how to build wealth from nothing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although our journey started when we barely walked, anyone can build wealth from nothing at any age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Undismayed and full of confidence in himself, Frank Hasenfratz soon found another&nbsp;job&nbsp;as a machinist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 1958 to 1964, he worked diligently to save money for the right entrepreneurial opportunity. In 1964, the time was right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> He opened a one-person machine shop in his garage with<strong> the $600<\/strong> he had saved from his six years of work.&#8221;&nbsp; &#8211; <strong><a dollars would keep us comfortable in our house with no mortgage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will also be able to help our autistic son if he needs financial assistance or a place to live. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps I&#8217;m overthinking the money, or maybe you think our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2018\/09\/06\/retirement-lifestyle-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">retirement lifestyle<\/a><\/strong> is far too posh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We don&#8217;t know how long we will live or what the inflation rate will be like, and it&#8217;s scary or should be for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-start-a-small-business-and-dream-big\">Start A Small Business And Dream Big <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A friend of ours on employment benefits returned to school to learn how to open a business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She chose business management to open a <strong>Personal Support Worker<\/strong> (PSW) and <strong>senior care<\/strong> operation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When her dad was ill, she struggled to find help, and after he passed away and she lost her job, she knew what she wanted to do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She wanted to <strong>make a difference<\/strong> for older people, their families, and medical care for the ill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can you believe she has a new office in a building, a fleet of cars, nurses, and personal support workers in less than 7 years?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she started this business, she was not trained in any medical field, and now she&#8217;s earning millions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-build-wealth-from-nothing-fast\">How To Build Wealth From Nothing Fast<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s no lie because there are only a handful of ways people get wealthy quickly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Win the Lottery <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jackpot at the Casino<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sizeable Inheritance of money or a for how to build wealth fast could instantly lose it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to money, that&#8217;s the risk-taker where it&#8217;s a do-or-die financial situation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-much-money-did-you-win\">How Much Money Did You Win?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you win? class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Buying and Selling Real Estate (flipping houses)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Passive income, such as running a successful blog, <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It was creating a product that is needed and successfully marketing it globally.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2018\/02\/08\/ultimate-guide-frugal-living-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Live a frugal life<\/a> working minimum wage jobs and up the ladder.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, the best way is to <a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2019\/09\/10\/6-money-saving-strategies-that-help-us-build-wealth\/\"><strong>build wealth<\/strong> <\/a>slowly unless you fall into lots of money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve lost count of how many visits this blog has had from someone wanting to<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2022\/02\/22\/how-to-handle-money-with-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> earn money fast<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s review a few to keep this post realistic and comparable to starting from scratch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to build wealth slowly from nothing and over 30, it&#8217;s better late than never. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many readers of this blog range from<strong> 30 to 70 years of age<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trust me when I say it&#8217;s never too late to build wealth from nothing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-build-wealth-slowly-when-you-re-young\">How To Build Wealth Slowly When You&#8217;re Young<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We both come from families who didn&#8217;t earn much money, and my mum stayed home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My father was an electrician but didn&#8217;t like having a boss so he would contract out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although they owned a profitable business I worked at while attending University, they left me in charge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They opened a second shop that wasn&#8217;t as successful, and they eventually decided to close them both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No, I did not earn any money from working for my parents as it was part of helping the family survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I needed cash while I was at University, I&#8217;d ask them, but I did have money saved up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amid it all, I got a job as a dish boy at a local restaurant where I went to University. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That job paid the rent, bills, food and clothes, so I didn&#8217;t have to tap into my savings account. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also paid for my years at University with the money I saved in a separate account. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To avoid getting a bank loan, I took on any job I could get growing up, such as cutting grass, washing windows, and grocery shopping for older people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Believe it or not, I bought my first car and<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2013\/07\/29\/buying-my-first-property-was-i-too-young\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> flat <\/a><\/strong>with the money saved from random jobs and my paper route. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was around when I joined <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2014\/12\/16\/nielsen-homescan-canada-shop-scan-get-rewarded-grocery-game-challenge-3-dec-15-212014\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nielsen Home Scan<\/a><\/strong> in the UK, which is also available in Canada. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without cleaning out my savings, I bought a used car that was good on petrol. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-building-my-entrepreneurial-skills\">Building My Entrepreneurial Skills<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I also knocked on doors and put signs up, looking for small jobs to earn money for school, and it worked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before I knew it, my parents were getting calls for me from neighbors from the village needing small jobs done for cash. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I was young, I did not want to spend money because I had ambitions for my future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My dream was to become a young homeowner and to do that, I had to learn how to build wealth from nothing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all start earning money from a clean slate unless born into wealth. I was not, and neither was Mrs. CBB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My nerdy side came out as I would enjoy watching my bank accounts grow but with little knowledge about finance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I moved to Canada, I lived in my townhouse for 9 years and sold it for the highest I could get. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before putting it on the market, my dad and I made some minor improvements, and I put a small white IKEA kitchen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I worked full-time, on holidays and extra overtime in a grocery packing facility.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was never a time I turned down earning double or triple wages during the holidays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My work also had a pension that I still have and a state pension, but I&#8217;m not sure how much that will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily my mum has been helping me with things while I&#8217;m in Canada, such as reading my mail (exciting) and buying gifts for my nieces and nephews. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before moving to Canada, I sold everything I owned, paid for two flight tickets one way (dog and I), and went off. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The profit I earned from the sale of my house went into the bank, and there&#8217;s never a time I look back with regret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-my-wife-and-i-have-the-same-financial-mindset\">My Wife And I Have The Same Financial Mindset<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>She says the toilet didn&#8217;t flush, and we had to wait for our dad to fix it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, when it rained, we put buckets in the living room to catch the rain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything we owned was from the 70s, and nothing changed unless we bought it for them as a gift. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her parents were far from wealthy, and they didn&#8217;t understand the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2023\/06\/16\/basic-budget-terminology-you-should-know\/\">basics of budgeting<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/10-step-mini-budgeting-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>10 Easy Steps To Learn How To Budget<\/strong> <\/a>(10 blog posts in total for free)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Mrs. CBB gradually understood what was happening, she went into money-making mode. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like me, she worked overtime, on weekends, and on holidays to build her savings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2019\/11\/09\/how-poor-money-management-can-affect-your-lifestyle-the-saturday-weekend-review-291\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grow up poor, <\/a>something inside of you <\/strong>wants to do better. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, not everyone in poverty pushes themselves in that direction but follows their parents&#8217; footsteps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, this is a choice unless there are medical reasons why someone cannot work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also had her first job handing the newspaper to neighbors at age 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> We both agree that this job was where our financial journey began as children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-watching-the-bank-account-like-a-hawk\">Watching The Bank Account Like A Hawk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>She remembers when she had<strong> $3000<\/strong> in her <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/api.fintelconnect.com\/t\/l\/624d66f0bb3920001b226949\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scotia bank account <\/a><\/strong>and thought she was<strong> rich<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under no circumstances was her <strong>bank account<\/strong> to go below that number, or there would be a small fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She went to college and had a <strong>$7000 student loan<\/strong> to pay back, and she did. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After college, she struggled for work but eventually found three part-time jobs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After paying off her OSAP loan, she bought a Hyundai Pony for $700, which was her ride. (not the animal) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After college, not much changed for her apart from being on <strong>welfare<\/strong> until she found work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, welfare is called <strong>Ontario Works\/Social Assistance, <\/strong>a much better name. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To claim <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/ontario-works\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ontario Works,<\/a> <\/strong>you must provide your finances and be willing to look for work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She fought so hard not to stay in the system because she was fit and ready to work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Staying home all day did her no justice, and she was bored, as most people would be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, it turned out good for her, and her <strong>Scotia bank account <\/strong>began to grow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bank-accounts-we-bank-with-in-ontario\">Bank Accounts We Bank With In Ontario<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I found it interesting how many Canadian bank accounts we&#8217;ve had over the years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of them offers different needs for my blogging business and us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/api.fintelconnect.com\/t\/l\/624d66f0bb3920001b226949\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scotia bank account<\/a><\/strong> and we still have it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Royal Bank of Canada she no longer has but was used for her OSAP loan and college savings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>TD Canada Trust she still has, plus our American bank account and Blog Savings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simpli Financial was (PC Financial), and we still have it, and it comes with no fees. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/api.fintelconnect.com\/t\/l\/624d6af01a2530001cbf2665\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tangerine Bank<\/a><\/strong> is new to us. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>EQ Bank<\/strong> is new for us as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/fs-bin\/click?id=a8kSprw0a6I&#038;offerid=1115263.5&#038;bids=1115263.5&#038;type=3&#038;subid=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">EQ Bank HISA<\/a><img which means there are no brick-and-mortar buildings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-moving-to-a-new-city-for-employment\">Moving To A New City For Employment <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, she moved to the city we are now and rented an apartment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was earning <strong>$15 an hour,<\/strong> and eventually, she had a 2000-square-foot house built at 30. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although she could pay the bill, the finances cut it too close, so she sold the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By then, she was earning $21 an hour, and even her frugal ways month <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I paid off the last few payments on our van, which were 0% interest <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I managed to get hired in a dream job, earning a fantastic salary with a defined pension plan <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We bought a family home that needed renovations, which I&#8217;m currently doing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mrs. CBB lost her job due to downsizing the organization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We
