{"id":105044,"date":"2022-01-20T08:02:35","date_gmt":"2022-01-20T13:02:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/?p=105044"},"modified":"2024-12-21T05:53:54","modified_gmt":"2024-12-21T05:53:54","slug":"our-wealth-building-strategies-2021-final-net-worth-1-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digitalskyweb.co\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2022\/01\/20\/our-wealth-building-strategies-2021-final-net-worth-1-16\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Wealth-Building Strategies: 2021 Final Net Worth (+1.16%)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When we began tracking our budget and net worth updates, we didn&#8217;t give much thought to <strong>wealth-building strategies. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was nothing more than <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2020\/02\/06\/how-to-effectively-track-and-budget-travel-expenses-free-printable\/\">using a budget to track our expenses <\/a><\/strong>and pay off any debt we owed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even today, now that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2020\/10\/27\/how-we-live-the-simple-life-in-our-40s-sept-2020-net-worth-update-1-27\/\">we are debt-free in our 40&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong>, our wealth-building strategies continue to be fairly simple. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why do you ask? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Life is too short of stashing all of your money away for a rainy day without enjoying it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We think differently, although we continue what wealth-building strategies we&#8217;ve incorporated over the past ten years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, I have our <strong>final December 2021 Net Worth Update <\/strong>and let&#8217;s chat about why things have changed for us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stash, Invest And Increase Wealth <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the start of our wealth-building strategies, we created a financial plan that included having a large retirement savings fund. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were very frugal and did anything to save money on anything we needed to purchase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since we have no debt, we are open to spending a bit more money on ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We still don&#8217;t go out to eat, but if we want to buy a nice cut of steak, we will. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our mindset has moved over to thinking simple while building wealth which our son will likely benefit from. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, we maxed out our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2017\/07\/06\/invest-rrsp-tfsa-non-registered-account-2\/\">RRSP, TFSA and non-registered investments<\/a><\/strong>. Plus, I have a defined benefits package at work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even our life insurance policy works for us, and we bought our son&#8217;s life insurance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once we pay for this for the next ten years, he&#8217;ll never need it ever again because he&#8217;s covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, he will have Canadian Budget Binder to run if he wants to, or he can sell his choice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s been so much forward-thinking and planning about retirement, death or illness in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, someone dies in the family, and another is waiting to die. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can&#8217;t unsee these things, and they weigh heavily on your heart and mind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We thought either we were getting old and settling, or we were just tired. Probably both, lol. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The big question is, how much money do we really need for retirement? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do we want to travel? I&#8217;m not sure I&#8217;d want to take money advice from someone who went bankrupt or has so much debt they are swimming in it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s my personal opinion about financial education and the internet. this time based on the historical data from the past ten years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 2020, when Covid-19 hit, we took a large dip in our investments as most people did. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then it slowly began to increase, and now we are ahead of where we thought we would be by about a year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Net Worth Increases And Decreases 2021 and decreases throughout 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our net worth had been on a steady incline until April and again in September when it dipped because of the markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The financial dip that we had was corrected from May to August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We started <strong>December 202<\/strong>0 at <strong>$1,359,582,46 <\/strong>and ended at <strong>$1,435<\/strong>,<strong>963.44<\/strong> with an increase of <strong>$76,380.98.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the 2021-current increase in housing prices, our net Worth would increase by approximately&nbsp;<strong>$1 million if we sold our house<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We won&#8217;t be selling our house any time soon, so that extra one million dollars is just dust in the air, for now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Should You Add Your Home Into Net Worth?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We bought our home for&nbsp;<strong>$265,000 in 2009&nbsp;<\/strong>and have done one increase to&nbsp;<strong>$345,000&nbsp;<\/strong>for our net worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I stopped there because I questioned whether it made sense to add it to our net worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Housing data, in my opinion, is irrelevant unless you are downsizing into cheaper accommodations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving into an apartment, condo, or a cheaper home in a smaller city would accurately increase our net worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, our neighbour sold her home and bought a new trailer home in Grand Bend for&nbsp;<strong>$200,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Had she sold her big-city house for near one million dollars, she would have walked away with an extra <strong>$300,000.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was a hoarder and sold the house for cash to companies who would buy and resell a house. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often we look at the big picture and then&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2020\/11\/19\/should-you-include-your-home-value-as-retirement-capital-october-net-worth-update-1-32\/\">remove the house,&nbsp;<\/a><\/strong>so we see more buying gifts and groceries for the holidays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were no exception since we were hosting Christmas Eve and Christmas day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a style=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/2018\/12\/11\/4-million-pc-optimum-points\/\">PC Optimum points <\/a>and spending over on groceries cost us more than anticipated with our Christmas projected expenses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, we&#8217;re happy we save for Christmas every month, so it&#8217;s not a massive hit to our net worth savings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, rewards points are awesome to spend if you collect them year-round. I believe we paid $70 for our son&#8217;s new X-Box at Shoppers Drug Mart. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For next month&#8217;s net worth update, I&#8217;ll reduce the cost of our truck as it has likely depreciated to reflect accurate information. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other than that, you can read our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianbudgetbinder.com\/free-tools\/monthly-budgets-budget-highlights\/\">December budget <\/a><\/strong>for more information on what changes we plan for 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our December net worth increase was <strong>$16,505.31<\/strong> or  1.16%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Earn It, Save It, Invest It, Build It<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember,&nbsp;<strong>\u201cIt\u2019s not about how much money you make; it\u2019s<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>how you save it<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People accumulate wealth because&nbsp;<em><strong>they know how to save or invest&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>their money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most negligible improvements should mean significant strides in working towards your goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be optimistic, and little by little with determination, you too
